I ended up sitting by myself for about an hour and a half because they [the program officials] were like, “Oh, follow the intern.” And when I came back after lunch, they [the residents] were all playing video games, and that was my first day, so I was just kinda sitting there against the wall, so awkward…. I didn’t know if I should stay or I should leave. I stayed till 4:30 with nobody talking to me; then I just left.

She went on to describe another instance when a patient’s kidney function deteriorated to the point that he needed emergency dialysis, but the housestaff realized it only when it was too late. She attributed it to the general culture at the hospital:
